Concolor Fir

An elegant tree with beautiful shape and exquisite citrus aroma. The tree parades silver-green soft foliage that is displayed in an upright, sweeping manner. Medium length needles, excellent needle retention, and pleasant branch habits make this a most desirable tree.

Field Guide

The Concolor Fir (Abies concolor), also known as the White Fir, is a majestic evergreen tree native to the western United States. It is characterized by its distinctive bluish-green needles and attractive form.

Size and Shape:

  • Concolor Firs are large evergreen trees, typically reaching heights of 40 to 70 feet when fully-mature.

  • They have a symmetrical, pyramidal shape with branches that extend horizontally and slightly upward.

Needles:

  • The needles of Concolor Fir are bluish-green to silvery-blue in color, giving the tree a striking appearance.

  • The needles are relatively long, measuring around 1 to 2.5 inches in length.

  • They are typically soft and flexible, and when crushed or rubbed, they emit a pleasant citrus or fruity fragrance.

Cones:

  • Concolor Firs produce upright, cylindrical cones that are typically around 2 to 4 inches long.

  • The cones have a light green to purplish color when young and gradually turn brown as they mature.

  • The scales of the cones are smooth and often have resinous tips.

Bark:

  • The bark of young Concolor Firs is usually smooth and grayish, with a somewhat scaly texture.

  • As the tree ages, the bark becomes thicker, developing furrows and turning gray-brown in color.

Origin:

  • Concolor Firs are native to the western United States, particularly in the Rocky Mountains and adjacent regions.

  • They can be found in mountainous areas and mixed conifer forests, often growing alongside other coniferous species like spruce and pine.
